If you notice your computer runs at a decent speed but that surfing the Internet is too slow, there is a simple, cheap way to fix it.
Everyone loves WiFi. It gives us the freedom to use our cell phones and other devices on our Internet connection. However, if your PC or Mac is close to your Internet modem/router, consider using an Ethernet cord to connect it to the Internet rather than solely relying on a wireless connection.
This isn’t always possible because of multiple computers and their proximity to the Internet router, but if you can use an Ethernet cord, your Internet speed will probably improve without you having to up your data plan with your Internet provider.
In fact, increasing the speed of your plan may not improve your surfing speed if the bottleneck is your WiFi. One note: If you use location services on your computer, keep the WiFi connection turned on even when the cable is plugged in because it is necessary for those services to work correctly.
An Ethernet cord costs only a few dollars, depending on its length. You can get one at any computer store or order one online.
If WiFi is your only option, you may need to upgrade your wireless router to a specialized one or place the router more centrally so that all computers get a good signal. If they don’t get a good signal, you download speed is too low.
